Beginning steps

I am going a little backward to steps leading to the panel drawing above. The technical beginnings for me begins with the model. Charles chose this Russian icon for my model. My goal is to stick as close to the original as I can, departing only to improve it. Once I have the model, I make a simplified drawing (see right image) to transfer onto a panel. I transferred the drawing by covering the back of the drawing with conte crayon, laying the drawing directly over the panel and tracing the lines with a pencil. I then went over the transfer lines on the panel with a silver point pencil (a silver wire purchased from a bead store and shoved into a drafting pencil) so the drawing will not smear like regular pencil once I start painting.

cool...i want to write in silver too...of course you're writing an icon which is profound and should be written, i don't really have anything that profound to say...i guess i'll just stick with a blog comment

Sharon has entered the blog-o-sphere...delightful and amazing! As I read about your process, I'm struck that the empahsis on making many small choices suits an aspect of your temperament--I don't think of you as a detail-oriented person, per se, but you do like to ruminate each artistic decision, big or small.

Loretta and Bora,

Thanks for your comments. I noticed Loretta that you refer to me as "writing" icons. Actually, that is technically correct, because there is actually a stronger connection between Scripture and icons than fine art aesthetic- so many people have said to me that the icon style does not appeal to them. In fact, more people have said they don't like the way icons look than do.

And, Bora, the agonizing I do over details is my perfectionist tendency. However, usually my perfectionism only kicks in when I actually _feel_ perfection is in my reach (which it is of course NOT in my reach). I _rarely_ am in the position where I can self-deceive myself into believing it is in reach. So, I am left with my usual thrown together, on the fly, last minute tendencies.

Thanks for commenting!
